Finding the spark again through flexible trade training

After his employer stopped trading and Caleb’s apprenticeship stalled, the right support got him back on track.

Caleb spent 2 months without work or progress in his electrical apprenticeship before discovering flexible trade training through TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275).

It presented a second chance to continue his electrical apprenticeship and receive his Certificate III in Electrotechnology (UEE30820).

Through the pilot, Caleb was paired with a local solar and battery installation company for an interview and was offered the apprentice position with the company.

Now he’s nearly qualified as an electrician and is already working with solar systems and batteries – a growth area for his trade.

The flexible trade training delivery pilot helps apprentices who have lost employment and training progress in the past 12 months.

It focuses on carpentry, electrical and plumbing at TAFE Queensland’s Acacia Ridge and Bracken Ridge campuses. The goal is to get apprentices reinstated through the Find Your Apprentice service.

The Department of Trade, Employment and Training also offers Training Assistance for people whose apprenticeship is cancelled but cannot access this pilot. It’s part of the ‘no wrong door’ approach to supporting apprentices to complete their training.

With the construction industry set to grow by 2.8% and employ 290,100 people by 2028-29, now is the time to restart your trade training.
