Building business success through staff training

At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS), training is more than a compliance requirement, it’s a cornerstone of staff development, retention, and organisational success. One of Queensland’s most iconic attractions and a not-for-profit dedicated to conservation, CWS recognises that investing in its people directly translates into stronger visitor experiences, improved business outcomes, and long-term sustainability.

In 2023, CWS welcomed more than 460,000 visitors, supported by 338 staff and 487 volunteers.

To deliver a world-class experience and ensure consistency across its 27-hectare site, the Sanctuary has built a comprehensive internal training framework.

From induction and job-specific training to leadership programs, cultural awareness initiatives, and vocational education, every team member has access to formal or informal training opportunities.

Programs such as Emerging Leaders and Rising Stars identify and nurture future managers, while First Nations Cultural Training fosters cultural understanding and authentic engagement with guests. In 2023, 26 per cent of staff participated in up to 17 training programs, with all employees receiving at least one form of professional development.

This approach to training has not only strengthened employee retention, but has fuelled innovation and created career pathways, with school-based trainees and TAFE students progressing into permanent employment.

CWS General Manager Travis Couch said their people are at the heart of everything they do.

“By empowering them with the right skills and development opportunities, we create a culture where staff feel valued, supported, and inspired to deliver exceptional experiences for our guests,” he said.

A strong workforce has seen CWS win Medium Employer of the Year at the 2024 Queensland Training Awards and three consecutive Gold Awards at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

Revenue has also increased, thanks to growth in memberships, retail sales, and repeat visits.

By embedding training into its strategic priorities, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary ensures that its mission to conserve and advance Australia’s natural and cultural heritage remains supported by a skilled and motivated workforce.
