Career-swapping Cameron excels in new field

In 2021, Brisbane-based hotel manager Cameron Flack found himself at a career crossroads.

Having spent nearly a decade working in the hospitality sector, Cameron sought new challenges in a field where he could take on leadership roles, while continuing to develop practical skills.

Eyeing a job in Queensland’s oil and gas sector, at age 30 Cameron took on an apprenticeship – enrolling in a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations with Astra Group Services.

Cameron’s appetite for education and training continued to peak while employed as a FIFO worker in remote Queensland, combining a demanding work schedule while studying a Diploma of Workplace Health and Safety, as well as a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

“Being away for three weeks at a time meant my study commitments often took place in donga rooms or site offices after long shifts, with little opportunity to unwind,” Cameron said.

“Despite this, I remained committed to my goals, knowing that investing in my education would lead to a more impactful and rewarding career.”

Employed by Global Engineering and Construction (GEC) – an oil and gas company operating in the Cooper Basin – Cameron says training helped him transition from a job as a trades assistant and a Lending Hand, to a role with GEC’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team.

“As a Leading Hand, my certificate III empowered me to lead with confidence, ensuring my crew operated efficiently and safely,” Cameron said.

“Later, my psychology expertise proved invaluable when I transitioned into the HSE team, where I developed and implemented initiatives that addressed psychosocial risks, promoted mental health, and fostered a culture of care and inclusivity.”

In 2025, Cameron’s commitment to training, upskilling and professional development was recognised at the Queensland Training Awards State Final, where he was named Vocational Student of the Year.

An unabashed ambassador for training, Cameron says he is now a mentor for workmates pursuing certificate III and IV qualifications - sharing his own experiences to help them navigate challenges and build confidence.

“As a leader, I aim to set the standard for excellence, ensuring that my team and colleagues see training as a pathway to success.”
