Former apprentices set for restart with $4.2 million project
A $4.2 million program, Reboot Your Trade Training, is helping out-of-trade apprentices get back on track.
It follows a successful pilot program where more than 120 carpentry, electrical and plumbing apprentices resumed their training.
The program is being expanded to support out-of-trade apprentices in air-conditioning and refrigeration, light-automotive, heavy-automotive and engineering trades.
For apprentices in priority trades like Christopher Yakovlev, it provides funded training and links them with new employers.
Christopher’s apprenticeship stalled when his employer stopped trading. After 3 years of dedicated work, he found himself struggling to find a new employer to take him on.
“Because my training hadn’t stayed up to date with my experience, I found that employers didn’t want to go near me as an apprentice candidate,” Christopher explained.
That’s when he discovered Reboot Your Trade Training at TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275). It forms part of Improved Completions, a joint initiative between the Australian and Queensland Governments.
“I saw the ad on Facebook, called TAFE Queensland, and they made it super easy,” Christopher said.
Christopher is now continuing his training with flexible Wednesday night classes that fit around his family and work commitments.
“Getting my training up to date with this program was the only option to get ready for a new employer to restart my apprenticeship. I feel really lucky that this was available,” he said.
