Helping students complete their training
Training unlocks opportunities and a skilled workforce for Queensland. While more students complete their training in Queensland than the national average, we aim to improve this further.
While some students don’t complete training because they get a job, others can face challenges and need support.
That’s why the Queensland and Australian Government launched the Improving completions initiative.
The initiative includes a range of programs across schools, training providers and employers to improve completion rates across the entire student journey.
$98 million plan focuses on 3 areas
Informed training choices
Programs within schools will offer a sample of different careers to help students choose what’s right for them.
- Gateway to Industry Schools program – Gives students practical learning opportunities to support career choices and pathways to employment.
- Careers Tasters: Allows year 10 students to experience different industries before choosing a qualification.
A new website and improved customer experience will give students clear and helpful information about training options.
Supporting retention
A student support network will provide practical, personal and academic support for students facing challenges during their training.
We will also work with employers to engage them in supporting apprentices and trainees to succeed. This includes the small business apprenticeship wage subsidy which offers financial support of small and family business to retain construction apprentices.
Flexible delivery models will help out-of-trade apprentices to complete their training. Read Caleb’s story of getting back on track with his electrical apprenticeship.
Skills Assure Suppliers will be supported to trial innovative approaches to supporting students through the Set for Success grant program.
Through an outreach program, we will help students who have left their training to return or move to another training pathway.
Insights and innovation
We are strengthening the training system by using better data, research and evaluation to understand what helps students complete their training.
This data and insights will help us to provide the right support at the right time.
Through new student voice surveys we will hear from students about their experience with training from enrolment to when they complete their training. This will enable targeted responses and decision-making.
It will also help us to continue improving the training system for students, employers and industries.
