Delivering a strong training workforce

Up to $28 million in joint funding will deliver a pipeline of high-quality vocational education and training (VET) teachers. This is crucial for training future workers, especially in areas and industries with skill gaps.

Measures to strengthen the VET workforce is a joint initiative between the Australian and Queensland governments. It will focus on 3 areas:

  1. attracting people to careers as VET teachers
  2. recognising and supporting excellence for VET trainers and assessors
  3. keeping VET trainers and assessors in the industry.

Attracting people to careers as VET teachers

This focus area will bring new teachers to the VET workforce and support them to complete relevant training:

  • A campaign will help attract VET teachers, raise awareness of VET careers and engage key audiences. For those ready to make the move, a website will refer them to learning pathways and support services. It will also provide information to help them transition to the VET workforce.
  • A new Training and Assessment (TAE) support package will increase the number of VET teachers available. Learn more about the TAE support for students.
  • New supported learning pathways will help people with industry experience and qualifications enter the VET workforce. For eligible candidates can train to become a VET trainer or assessor for free or at low cost.
  • We will deliver a support package for training providers looking to engage VET teacher trainees.  This package gives trainees mentoring and learning support. It also helps organisations employ and supervise trainee VET educators.

Recognising and supporting excellence for VET trainers and assessors

Ongoing professional development will support a strong VET workforce:

  • Micro-credentials, short courses, and resources will address training gaps and support deeper learning. New resources will aim to improve training delivery to diverse student groups.
  • A new learning and development platform is being developed to host these resources. It will give trainers a place to practice new skills and share innovative approaches.

Keeping VET trainers and assessors in the industry

Sustainability and retention is the third focus area of our jointly funded $28 million program:

  • We’ll support innovative, new, flexible ways to improve and use Queensland‘s VET workforce.
  • Industry partners and registered training organisations (RTO) will play a key role in identifying and delivering these approaches.
  • A toolkit of retention initiatives will help keep existing VET teachers. This includes succession planning and testing a mentoring model.
