Closing the gap in skills and jobs
The Queensland and Australian Governments are jointly investing $64.6 million in a Closing the Gap training initiative. As part of the National Skills Agreement, it will build on the strengths of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training sector to develop skills for jobs.
The initiative will strengthen local training organisations led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In doing so, it will expand access to quality skills and training across Queensland.
The initiative has 4 focus areas:
- $29 million to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to deliver training to match local workforce needs.
- A business-support program funded by $6 million to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training organisations to grow and succeed.
- $15 million for skills initiatives for critical industries, such as construction, health care and social assistance. This aims to connect skilled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders with careers in growth sectors.
- More than $14 million for projects to build the training sector workforce, including more trainers and assessors, and to support students to complete their training.
